Adjust and Level Your Image Brightness
by Jovi Yu
Taking pictures invites a number of ailments we've all suffered from: the light's too bright, too dark or there is someone you don't know lurking in the corner. Hence, Adobe Photoshop is packed with the tools you need for this purpose, whether it's simply adjusting the brightness and contrast or cropping that stranger out of the picture. Other ways to improve your photos are sharpening your images and even recoloring images completely.

Adobe Photoshop 7.0

1. Adjust dark images
Open the photo to be adjusted and view it at 100% magnification (colors might not be correct if you view the image at smaller magnifications). Go to the Image menu, select Adjustments followed by Brightness/Contrast.

2. Manual adjustment
Adjusting the brightness and contrast, you have two simple sliders that can be changed in two directions - the plus direction increasing the brightness or contrast. Move the sliders until the image is correct then click the OK button.

3. Adjusting levels
Another way of changing the balance of light and shadow in a picture is to adjust the levels. Go to Image, Adjustments, Levels and use the sliders to change the Input Levels until the image looks okay.

4. Colour balance
If the color needs adjusting in an image, go to Image > Adjustments, then open the Hue/Saturation command. The Saturation slider makes the colors more or less intense, whereas Hue changes the image colors.

5. Cropping
Many photos have elements that you don't want to print. Using the Crop tool in the toolbar on left, you can choose which parts of the image to keep, and which to discard. Double click on the chosen area to perform the crop.

6. Sharpening an image
It is possible to sharpen an image using the filter provided. Go to the Filter menu, scroll down to Sharpen, click on Sharpen or Sharpen Edges from the submenu that appears. Now, you get a sharp image.
